Toyota announced on Thursday that its President and CEO, Akio Toyoda, will be stepping down from his role effective April 1st. He will be moving to the position of Chairman of the Board of Directors, replacing Takeshi Uchiyamada, who will remain on the board as a voting member.

Koji Sato, who currently serves as Toyota's Operating Officer, Chief Branding Officer, President of Lexus International, and President of Gazoo Racing, will assume the role of President and CEO while retaining his Operating Officer title and being added to the Board of Directors.

In a translated webcast, Toyoda said, “I thought the best way to further Toyota’s transformation would be for me to become chairman in support of a new president, and this has led to today’s decision," He also acknowledged the support of Chairman Uchiyamada, "Chairman Uchiyamada has long supported me in all imaginable ways."

Akio Toyoda, who is also known as "Mr. Morizo" in the racing community, is the grandson of the founder of Toyota. He joined the board of directors in 2000 before being promoted to Executive Vice President in 2005 and moving into his current role in 2009. Under his leadership, the company has focused on green tech while also retaining his passion for racing and rally.
