The Eau De Parfum, dubbed Smells Like WD-40, was developed by New York art collective MSCHF, known for creating mock products aimed at highlighting the absurdity in various industries. Previously involved in unconventional advertising campaigns for brands, the group shifted focus to self-initiated projects in late 2019.
The WD-40 Company, the manufacturer of the original lubricant spray, issued a statement on its social media channels, distancing itself from MSCHF's perfume and clarifying it has no affiliation with the project. Despite this, the company expressed appreciation for MSCHF's ingenuity.
At a price point of 48 USD, Smells Like WD-40 quickly sold out and is not expected to be restocked. The WD-40 Company also warned against using their product on the skin or body, despite MSCHF's fragrance launch.
