The U.S. State Department has authorized a $10 billion purchase of advanced rockets and munitions by the Polish government, according to an announcement on Tuesday.

The order includes 18 M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) launchers, 468 launcher-loader module kits, 45 M57 Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS), and hundreds of guided multiple launch rocket warheads variants - technology that Ukraine put to use against Russia in recent months to reclaim territory near Kherson.

"This proposed sale will support the foreign policy goals and national security objectives of the United States by improving the security of a NATO Ally that is a force for political stability and economic progress in Europe," said the Defense Security Cooperation Agency in its official statement.

Despite Congress having authority to veto such transactions, this one is expected to pass through Capitol Hill with ease.  Poland declared its intention to acquire 500 HIMARS launchers as part of an overall effort to rearm with updated Western equipment before Russia's incursion into Ukraine - with some components being produced by factories within the nation's borders. This acquisition also aims to ensure integration with the Polish battlefield management system.

The country has split other major orders between American and South Korean sources, including 288 K239 Chunmoo multiple-rocket launchers and K-2 tanks.
