The kei car segment, unique to the Japanese market, has remained popular despite changes in the automotive industry, and now Mitsubishi is responding to the trend towards electric power with the Minicab-MiEV.

The carmaker has been selling a similar version of this vehicle in Japan since 2011, and with the recent announcement, the company is emphasizing that the electric kei car will also be produced outside Japan.

The Minicab-MiEV is a kei-car segment commercial delivery vehicle with a battery-powered powertrain, derived from the i-MiEV, one of the world’s first mass-produced electric vehicles. The powertrain components will be transferred to the new commercial vehicle without compromising its cargo capacity.

The Mitsubishi Motors Krama Yudha plant in Indonesia will be responsible for assembling the Minicab-MiEV, starting next year. The factory has an annual production capacity of 220,000 vehicles per year and currently employs around 3,300 people. It currently builds the Pajero Sport, Xpander, and Xpander Cross vehicles.

The Minicab-MiEV specifications include an output of 40 horsepower (30 kilowatts) and 145 pound-feet (196 Newton-meters) of torque. Customers can choose from two battery options, with capacities of 10.5 kilowatt-hours and 16 kilowatt-hours, respectively. The range at a single charge is 62 miles (100 kilometers) and 93 miles (150 km), respectively.
