Tesla's upcoming Giga Mexico factory is set to be two times larger than Giga Texas, making it one of the most significant projects in the automotive industry's history. While Tesla has only released an image of the planned site, the Mexican government has revealed more details about the project, including its purpose, location, and investment.

According to the Mexican government, Tesla's Gigafactory Mexico will be located in the Santa Catarina municipality near Monterrey (Nuevo Leon). The site spans almost 4,200 acres, which is 68% larger than the Tesla Giga Texas, covering 2,500 acres.

While Tesla has not yet revealed any specific details about the new electric vehicle envisioned for the site, Jesus Nava, the mayor of Santa Catarina, says that it will be revealed when Tesla breaks ground in about three months from now.

The scale of the investment in the Giga Mexico factory is estimated to be $10 billion, with 10,000 employees expected to work at the site. However, initially, Tesla plans to invest $5 billion and hire 5,000 people. It is unclear if the investment includes the production of other elements like drive units and battery cells.

A senior Mexican official reportedly mentioned an annual output of one million vehicles per year, but it is unclear whether this is Tesla's official target. Considering the size of the Giga Mexico factory, it is possible that this is just the initial goal, and Tesla plans to increase its output later on.

Tesla has ambitious plans to increase its output to 20 million units per year in the long term. The Giga Mexico factory will be a crucial step towards achieving this target.

Tesla announced the Giga Mexico factory on March 1, 2023. Construction is expected to start within in Summer 2023.
