The redesigned A4, set to debut later this year, will reportedly bear the A5 moniker, along with its wagon variant. The name change is part of Audi's plan to eventually sell the A4 model strictly as an electric vehicle, with other models transitioning to electric drivetrains as well.
In line with this, the upcoming A6 model is expected to be renamed A7, but the electric version will still carry the A6 name. Similarly, future electric cars from Audi will continue to bear the "E-Tron" suffix, such as the Q4 E-Tron and the Q8 E-Tron.
The report also suggests that Audi will rename its S-badged models to higher numbers to differentiate them from the electric-only models. This means that an S5 sedan and an S5 Avant are expected to arrive in the market soon.
However, the fate of Sportback models remains unclear as Auto Express did not address the issue. It is speculated that these models will retain their current A5/S5 and A7/S7 names, with the addition of "Sportback" at the end.
Meanwhile, Audi has already confirmed the launch of an A8 E-Tron in 2024. The brand is also reportedly considering an RS6 E-Tron, a high-performance electric vehicle.
All-electric Audi models will be built on dedicated platforms instead of sharing underpinnings with internal combustion engine-powered vehicles. The brand has also stated that its final combustion engine-powered car will be launched in 2025, with every new Audi product from 2026 onwards being electric. The production of gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles will end by 2033.
