Nissan is planning to launch an electric SUV carrying the Skyline badge in 2025, according to Japanese magazine Best Car. The current Skyline, which has been on sale since 1957 and is currently in its thirteenth generation, will be retired in two years' time.
The new model was originally intended to be a next-gen sedan, but it will now be an electric SUV based on the Nissan Ariya. The Skyline name has previously been used for a JDM-spec rebadged Infiniti EX, but this will be the first time the fabled badge will be used on an EV.
While the flagship Ariya has a maximum output of 389 hp, the Skyline electric crossover could be slightly more potent with over 400 hp from a pair of electric motors, Best Car suggests.
The report should be taken with caution, as Nissan has yet to officially confirm it. Best Car claims to have an internal source but we will have to wait and see whether there is any truth in the story.
The Nissan Skyline has a cult following, particularly among enthusiasts of Japanese sports cars. Its move to an electric SUV may disappoint some fans who were hoping for a next-generation Skyline sedan, but it will undoubtedly attract a new audience who are looking for a high-performance electric SUV.
