Kia has unveiled the EV5 compact crossover as a concept vehicle that features several significant portions of the EV9 but adds new and distinct styling cues to provide a glimpse into the manufacturer's future direction. The EV5 was introduced during the company's Chinese EV Day.

According to the head of Kia's Global Design Center, Karim Habib, the concept EV5 combines contrasting visual influences with emotive form languages and innovative, user-oriented interior architecture, offering a unique and futuristic design. The vehicle features a “Digital Tiger Face” at the front, with lighting components that stretch across the grille and along the sides of the front fascia. The electric crossover comes with a clean face courtesy of the star map signature lighting technology.

Kia's opposites united design philosophy was integrated into the EV5 concept, blending contrasting visual influences to create its unique design. The interior architecture of the EV5 is still quite concept-like, with rear suicide doors that provide a broad opening to the cabin, swiveling individual seats that rotate towards the outside, and a ’90s station wagon-style bench seat that emerges from the trunk floor facing to the rear, accompanied by a picnic table.

The Korean brand made several eco-friendly moves when it came to the EV5's interior. They used upcycled PET bottles and seaweed extract for the seats, doors, headliner, and dashboard, while endeavoring to offer calmness to the occupants through the color palette. The carmaker also decided not to incorporate any animal leather within the EV5.

Kia confirms that the concept EV5 will eventually become a production vehicle sometime later this year, with production commencing in China before expanding globally. The company will likely announce details concerning the powertrain, electric range, and more when the production version is launched.
