Volkswagen's commercial division has announced that the Multivan T7 will receive a new California Camper version later this year, which will include digital services for the Cali Community, as well as new services to complement the vehicle purchase.

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles held its annual press conference this week, where CEO Carsten Intra announced the Multivan T7 will receive a camper makeover in 2023 and will be named the new California as part of the "California Universe".

This expansion aims to provide more camping options and better support for customers. In addition, the company plans to offer digital services for the Cali Community, as well as new services to complement the vehicle purchase.

While details about the new California camper were not disclosed, it is expected to come with a plug-in hybrid powertrain. The regular Multivan, which is based on the MQB platform, combines a turbocharged 1.4-liter gasoline engine with an electric motor, a 13-kWh lithium-ion battery pack, and a seven-speed DSG. Other engine options include the 1.5 TSI and 2.0 TSI engines and a 2.0 TDI.

Moreover, VW Commercial Vehicles is also working on a plug-in hybrid Caddy and a next-gen Crafter EV. The new Transporter workhorse, jointly developed with Ford, will premiere in 2024. The company also announced that the ID. Buzz AD, a purely electric van, will arrive in 2025 and is expected to be followed by a California camper version.
