Genesis, the luxury arm of South Korean automaker Hyundai, has unveiled its new GV80 Coupe Concept at the New York Auto Show. The concept is based on the GV80 SUV, and is expected to be available for purchase in the near future. The GV80 Coupe represents the latest example of a popular trend in the luxury car market - the "coupe-ification" of SUVs.
The exterior of the GV80 Coupe is striking, with a lowered, fastback roofline and vivid orange paint that immediately draws the eye. The front fascia has been redesigned with new grille inserts, bigger intakes, and extra slots under the main grille. The headlights have also been slimmed down to give the car a more aggressive appearance. Spoilers have been added at the top and trailing edges of the hatch, along with full-width double-bar taillights from the Genesis X concept cars.
Inside, the GV80 Coupe features four racing seats with orange plaid stitching, which replace the conventional seating. The back of the seats is also painted in the same orange color as the exterior. The steering wheel is a three-spoke design, and there is a serious-looking chassis brace behind the rear seats.
Genesis GV80 Coupe Concept
Genesis has not yet released any official specifications for the GV80 Coupe, nor has the company given any estimates for when the car might go into production. However, the company has indicated that the design is focused on performance, which suggests that it may have a different powertrain lineup than the regular GV80. It is possible that the twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6 could be standard equipment, or that a hotter engine option may be offered.
The GV80 Coupe represents Genesis's entry into a crowded market, as almost every other luxury brand already has at least one SUV coupe in their lineup. However, with its sporty styling and performance-focused design, the GV80 Coupe could be serious competition for established players like BMW, Mercedes, and Porsche.
