As people discover the practicality and versatility of van body type, they have become more desirable and cooler. GAC, a Chinese automaker, has showcased their vision of the future of this segment through the Van Life concept. This is an all-terrain, autonomous, and zero-emission vehicle that would fit perfectly in a sci-fi movie.

The Van Life is the second concept from the “Car Culture” series after the Barchetta, designed at the GAC R&D Center Europe. The location of the facilities in Milan made it the perfect excuse to present the concept at the 2023 Milan Design Week in Italy, instead of the recent Shanghai Auto Show in China. GAC says that the go-anywhere vehicle was created for long journeys as an alternative to airplanes.

The Van Life adopts one-box proportions with a symmetrical shape, full-width LEDs on both ends, massive wheels, and a hefty ground clearance. The clean surfacing and the small windows make it look like an extra-terrestrial expedition vehicle ready to conquer the rough terrains of our solar system. Furthermore, the futuristic tires have retractable flaps for traction in any kind of terrain, and four Lidar sensors stick out of the roof when the vehicle is in autonomous mode.

Interestingly, the autonomous function can be used anywhere in the world as the – fictional – system uses the position of stars in the sky to navigate. The concept rides on a fully electric platform with next-gen solid-state batteries providing it with extended range and improving its environmental credentials. Speaking of which, the Van Life has a reduced carbon footprint, as most of its lightweight components are made from recycled waste materials like plastic, aluminum, and carbon fiber.

The sci-fi looks continue inside, where we find two seats and a massive space at the back for luggage and equipment which can easily be converted into a sleeping area. The “orbital frame” surrounding the cabin allows passengers to mount or hang whatever they want, like smartphones, table trays, storage compartments, bags, and even a hammock. The modular part at the front which is exposed to the sun thanks to the inclined windshield can be used to warm water or produce energy from solar panels.

The cabin can be accessed from suicide doors on one side of the vehicle, while a panoramic sunroof makes sure there is plenty of light despite the lack of side windows. Another highlight of the concept is the benches that slide out, creating a seating space right next to the vehicle and expanding the living area to the oudoors.

Speaking about the Van Life, Stéphane Janin, Director of GAC Advanced Design Milan said: “This concept highlights what is great about being able to go wherever you want to. We believe that cars are not just objects that move people from A to B, but also machines that create good memories”.

The vehicle concept is not a preview of a production model, but rather a design study that allowed the designer to freely imagine without restrictions. Although it is not a production model, we believe that vans may eventually rival SUVs and pickups as a viable option for those seeking adventure.
