The French automotive market has been a hub for car production for many years, with brands such as Peugeot, Citroen, DS, Renault, Alpine, Bugatti, Aixam, and Ligier calling it home. But which brands are the French people favoring the most?

According to a recent study conducted by market research company YouGov, Peugeot remains on top for 2022. However, the next four spots are taken by German brands, namely Mercedes, Audi, Volkswagen, and BMW.

YouGov evaluated brands based on specific factors such as General Impression, Quality, Value for Money, Reputation / Employer Brand, Satisfaction, and Recommendation. The study revealed that Peugeot remains in the top spot in France for the fifth consecutive year, indicating the brand’s consistency in the local market.

The surprising results show that while many expected French brands Citroen and Renault to follow Peugeot, they were actually ranked 6th and 8th, respectively. Instead, the French prefer German automakers, with Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Volkswagen, and BMW taking spots 2 through 5. Toyota came in 7th place, followed by Ferrari in 9th, and Ford in 10th. Other non-French brands that made the top 10 include Dacia, Kia, Hyundai, Cupra, and Skoda, which all showed improvement but didn’t make it to the top spots.

Here's the full rating and respective scores:

Peugeot's reputation is not just based on one study. Another market research company, IFOP, also ranked Peugeot as the first among France’s “Most Admired Companies” in the automotive business. Additionally, Peugeot’s popularity is not just limited to surveys, as the Peugeot 208 supermini has been the best-selling car in France for the past two years, despite being on the verge of a mid-life cycle update.
