Honda, renowned for its automobiles and motorcycles, has announced its decision to cease manufacturing gas-powered lawnmowers and equipment. The company cites supply chain issues and the growing prominence of battery-powered alternatives as the driving factors behind this strategic move.

Honda informed its power equipment dealers of its intention to halt lawnmower production, along with other gas-powered equipment, effective September 2023. The company clarified that its decision stems from market dynamics such as stringent environmental regulations, evolving customer preferences, and a focus on expanding profitability within its product portfolio.

While Honda will discontinue the production of gas-powered lawnmowers, it plans to continue selling the existing inventory of lawn and garden products, as well as industrial-type power products until 2024. Additionally, Honda reassured its customers that it will maintain support for service and parts operations.

Although Honda did not explicitly state the reasons, it is evident that persistent supply chain challenges and the increasing popularity of battery-powered lawn care equipment have significantly impacted its power tool division. Notably, Honda has not yet introduced any battery-powered equipment to compete with established manufacturers like Toro and Stihl, or emerging brands like Ego and Greenworks. This approach mirrors Honda's recent strategy in its automotive division, which has recently begun planning to transition some plants to electric vehicle production.

The future remains uncertain as to whether Honda will exit the power equipment market entirely or introduce its own line of electric lawnmowers and power tools. However, other brands that utilize Honda gasoline engines for mowers and equipment, such as generators, will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. In the meantime, Honda's manufacturing plants, like the one in Swepsonville, North Carolina, will shift their focus to the production of all-terrain vehicles like quad-runners and UTVs.

Power tool enthusiasts express hope that Honda will either remain in the market or eventually make a comeback in some form. Pro Tool Reviews speculates that the company will eventually unveil a new product line, maintaining its legacy of constructing high-quality and reliable equipment.
