Google is set to revolutionize the dashcam industry by transforming Pixel phones into dual-purpose devices. Soon, you won't need to invest in a dedicated gadget, as your Pixel phone will be able to function as a dashcam, thanks to an upcoming update.

The product was found by 9to5google, which spotted a “dogfood” build of the feature in Google’s Personal Safety app. “Dogfooding” is when developers take apps home with them to test them in the real world, suggesting that the new feature was uploaded to the public version of the app in error.

Researchers discovered a new feature called "Dashcam" in a recent release of a "dogfood" build of the Personal Safety app. This feature enables users to record video and audio while driving, providing valuable information in case of accidents or unexpected situations. By mounting your phone in the right spot, the recording becomes an essential tool for post-incident analysis.

Launching the Dashcam feature is effortless. Users can access it through a new shortcut in the "Be prepared" section of the home page. The feature allows manual recording initiation and viewing of recent videos. Notably, your phone remains fully usable during recording, including navigation with Google Maps. Alternatively, you can conserve power by locking the screen, and the recording will continue.

Google has made this feature incredibly user-friendly. During the setup process, you can choose to have recordings start automatically when you connect to a specific Bluetooth device, such as your car stereo or infotainment system, and end when you disconnect. The app automatically deletes recordings after three days unless you choose to save them. The videos are compressed, averaging 30 MB per minute, with a maximum recording length of 24 hours.

Using a smartphone as a dashcam offers several advantages, especially considering the superior camera quality that most phones, including Pixels, possess. However, some users have raised concerns about heat generation, especially when exposed to direct sunlight. Additionally, it remains unclear whether Dashcam will be exclusive to Pixel phones or available for other devices using Google's Personal Safety app.
