As the renowned German automaker continues to offer both gas and electric models, distinguishing between the two has become a bit confusing. To address this challenge, Audi has developed a new naming system to make it easier to differentiate.

According to a report by MotorTrend, Audi's new naming scheme will designate EVs with even numbers, while internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles will be associated with odd model numbers. At first glance, this seems fairly straightforward. Models like the A4, A6, Q4, and Q8 will be EVs, while the A3, A5, and A7 will be gas-powered models that will eventually be phased out.

However, as MotorTrend highlights, Audi's current model lineup already poses some complications. For instance, the A8, which recently received a midcycle upgrade, won't have a successor, making it illogical to rename it as the A9. Another tricky case is the E-Tron GT, which lacks a number in its name and will retain its original designation.

With 20 new models set to launch in the next two years, half of which will be EVs, Audi must quickly sort out any naming discrepancies. The company aims for electric vehicles to account for 30 percent of its U.S. sales by 2025. As Audi introduces more EVs, it will be crucial for customers and enthusiasts alike to understand the distinction between the evens and odds in their model names.
