The 2023 Toyota Yaris is set to receive a refreshing update in Europe, with the introduction of more powerful hybrid options and significant improvements to its safety and technology features.

More Powerful Hybrid Options

The 2023 Yaris introduces a new hybrid drivetrain called the "Hybrid 130," complementing the existing Hybrid 115 configuration. Both hybrid systems feature a 1.5-liter engine, but the new Hybrid 130 boasts a larger electric motor and improved software within its transaxle. With these enhancements, the combined output power increases to 130 hp (96 kW), while torque improves from 141 Nm (104 lb-ft) to 185 Nm (136 lb-ft) – a significant 30 percent increase.

Toyota emphasizes that the most notable advantage of the new hybrid system lies in its performance during overtaking maneuvers. It now takes only 7.5 seconds to accelerate from 80 km/h (50 mph) to 120 km/h (75 mph), and the 0–100 km/h (0–62 mph) time has been reduced to 9.2 seconds, half a second quicker than before.

Although the Hybrid 130 shows a slight increase in CO2 emissions compared to the Hybrid 115, Toyota assures that the rise is modest, maintaining the Yaris' best-in-class status with emission levels ranging from 96–116 g/km. Both hybrid drivetrains will be available, but the higher-performance hybrid configuration will be exclusively offered in the Premiere Edition and GR Sport grades. Speaking of the Premiere Edition, it's a new addition to the Yaris lineup, featuring exclusive Neptune Blue paint, a contrasting black roof and pillars, 17-inch alloys, and stylish blue stitching and accents inside the cabin.

Enhanced Safety Features

Toyota has taken strides to improve the level of standard active and passive safety features in the 2023 Yaris, introducing these new features under the Toyota T-Mate moniker. The collision detection system has been upgraded to now detect motorcycles, in addition to cars, pedestrians, and cyclists.

Furthermore, the Yaris incorporates new digital safety features such as Acceleration Suppression At Low Speed, which prevents sudden acceleration when a vehicle is detected ahead. The Emergency Driving Stop System, which works in conjunction with Lane Trace Assist, alerts the driver if they fall asleep or become unresponsive while on the highway. In such cases, the system gently brings the car to a stop, activates the hazard lights, and unlocks the doors.

The driver assistance technology in the 2023 Yaris doesn't stop there. The new Proactive Driving Assist feature automatically reduces the car's speed when the driver releases the accelerator pedal and detects an upcoming car or curve in the road. Additionally, the steering assist adjusts the steering force, allowing for smoother and more stable turns. While these driver-assist technologies may not cater specifically to enthusiasts, they enhance the overall driving experience for the standard Yaris.

Notably, the 2023 Yaris can receive updates to Toyota's Safety Sense system over the air for the first time. New software upgrades will be downloaded and installed while the car is being driven, ensuring convenience and keeping the safety features up to date.

Revamped Infotainment System

The 2023 Yaris benefits from a redesigned infotainment system that brings several new features. One of the highlights is the customizable driver's instrument display, offering four different options to suit individual preferences. The size of the display varies depending on the chosen model grade. High, GR Sport, and Premiere Edition grades boast a spacious 12.3-inch "combimeter" display positioned ahead of the driver, while the Mid+ grade features a 7-inch version. The size of the infotainment screen is also model-dependent, with options of either a nine or 10.5-inch display.

Toyota has incorporated wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto functionality into the Yaris, enabling seamless smartphone integration. Additionally, the voice recognition software has been improved to respond to a wider range of commands, including climate control functions.

Digital Smart Key

For the first time in its history, the Yaris will offer a digital smart key system that allows users to lock or unlock the car, operate the climate control, and activate hazard lights remotely using their Apple or Android smartphones. However, this convenient functionality will require a yearly subscription to the service, although the Premiere Edition will come with a one-year connection bundled.

If the refreshed 2023 Toyota Yaris catches your interest, you can expect order books to open in June in selected European markets. Pricing details will be announced closer to the launch date, tailored to individual markets.
