Toyota has recently issued a recall that affects approximately 111,000 owners of the Corolla Cross due to a potential airbag problem. This recall impacts around 96,000 units of the 2022-2023 model year Corolla Cross in the United States, along with nearly 14,000 vehicles in Canada. The company recommends that owners avoid using the front passenger seat until the issue is resolved.

The recall is a result of a manufacturing error in the instrument panel where the front passenger side airbag is located. Due to this error, there is a possibility that the airbag might not deploy properly in the event of an accident. This significantly increases the risk of injury or even death for occupants of the vehicle. Furthermore, the affected Corolla Cross models do not comply with all applicable regulations.

It is not yet clear if any injuries, deaths, or accidents have been caused by this defect. Toyota is currently investigating the nature of the production fault that led to the airbags not deploying as intended. In order to fix the issue, the company plans to replace the instrument panel responsible for inhibiting the airbag deployment.

Owners of the affected Corolla Cross models will be notified of the issue by late July 2023. Toyota will request that these owners bring their vehicles to an authorized dealer for inspection. If necessary, the instrument panel will be replaced at no cost to the owner.
