In a bid to commemorate its pioneering legacy, SAS is offering 30 tickets for this historic flight, with each ticket priced at 1946 kr ($179). This figure is a tribute to the year SAS commenced its flights, symbolizing the airline's longstanding commitment to innovation. Anko van der Werff, President and CEO of SAS, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "The fact that we can now invite our passengers to the next major milestone in the future of aviation is a natural continuation of that pioneering spirit and a significant step on our journey towards more sustainable aviation."
The aircraft chosen for this milestone flight is the ES-30 model, a 30-passenger electric plane developed by Heart Aerospace. SAS has been an early supporter of Heart's electric aircraft, having signed a letter of support in September 2022 to introduce the ES-30 model to its regional fleet. Heart Aerospace's electric plane has garnered significant interest from industry leaders, with United Airlines and Air Canada among the companies investing in this technology.
The ES-30 is equipped with four electric motors and an undisclosed battery system, delivering an impressive all-electric range of 200 km (124 mi). While this may seem relatively short, it perfectly suits regional air travel needs, with the added advantage of a quick 30-minute fast charging capability for swift flight turnarounds. Heart Aerospace has further ambitious plans to double the all-electric range by the late 2030s. Notably, Heart partnered with BAE Systems, a renowned defense and aerospace leader, to develop a "first of its kind" battery system in March.
For those eager to secure their spot on this groundbreaking journey, reservations can be made starting June 2 at flysas.com/electric. It's important to note that SAS has not yet announced the specific date or departure location for the flight. However, travelers who successfully reserve their seats will receive these details via email at a later date.
