Honda has introduced a new smartphone app designed to assist teenagers and novice drivers in enhancing their driving skills. The Honda Driver Coaching app goes beyond the conventional provision of safety tips by utilizing the vehicle's onboard computer and incorporating a gaming element into the learning experience.

The app, currently available exclusively on iOS through the Apple App Store, offers real-time analysis of a driver's inputs once installed and connected to the vehicle's system. It monitors crucial aspects such as steering, braking, and acceleration, providing relevant instructions whenever necessary. Upon completion of a lesson, the app offers a comprehensive summary of the driver's performance, specific tips for improvement, and a score to monitor progress.

"With schools closing for the summer break and the driving season approaching, we believe that our new Honda Driver Coaching app can have a positive impact on young drivers and enhance road safety for everyone," stated MJ Foxley, Safety Strategy Leader of American Honda Motor Co., Inc.

The app is exclusively compatible with Honda and Acura models equipped with Apple CarPlay and has specific limitations based on the vehicle's model year. Currently, the Honda Driver Coaching app is compatible with the following models:

  • Honda Civic (2019-2020)
  • Honda Insight (2018-2022)
  • Honda Accord (2018-2020 and 2023-newer)
  • Honda HR-V (2023-newer)
  • Honda CR-V (2020-newer)
  • Honda Pilot (2023-newer)
  • Acura Integra (2023-newer)

Young and inexperienced drivers face a heightened risk of accidents, injuries, and fatalities on the road. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), individuals aged 16 to 19 are nearly three times more likely to be involved in a fatal crash compared to those aged 20 and above. In 2020 alone, car accidents claimed the lives of approximately 2,800 teenagers and caused injuries to an additional 227,000.

The Honda Driver Coaching app has the potential to be an invaluable resource for new drivers. It covers a range of topics, including driving position, steering wheel operation, brake usage, and more, based on an analysis of the driver's inputs. The app's ability to tailor lessons and tips to the individual's driving behavior sets it apart from generic safety recommendations. By placing driver safety information in the hands of more people, this innovative app can contribute to a safer driving environment for all.
