The North American electric vehicle charging market is undergoing a transition from the Combined Charging System (CCS1) to Tesla's North American Charging Standard (NACS) connector.

Tesla has developed its proprietary charging connector, renamed NACS, which will be supported by Ford, General Motors, and Rivian starting in 2025, initially through adapters to CCS1.

The SAE J1772 (AC) charging connector, also known as Type 1, which is commonly used in North America, may have a gloomy future as the industry shifts towards NACS.

The switch from CCS1 to NACS primarily relates to DC fast charging, and if the industry adopts NACS, there would be no need to keep the J1772 connector.

In the future, it is expected that EV charging will become simpler with a single plug type for both AC and DC charging scenarios, eliminating the need for various connectors and adapters.

Tesla already offers adapters to convert J1772 to NACS for compatibility with their charging infrastructure.
