BMW is gearing up for an upgrade to its immensely popular X3. With the codename G45, the fourth iteration of this Bavarian beauty, which competes with Mercedes GLC, has been caught on camera resting on a trailer during testing. Not just any X3, mind you, but the M Performance version, as indicated by its quad exhaust system.

The prototype features the full production body with final headlights and possibly taillights. The large two-tone wheels with red brake calipers suggest it's an M Performance model, likely to be named "X3 M50i." It's uncertain if there will be a power increase, as the larger SUVs with "M60i" designation have the same output as their "M50i" predecessors.

The upcoming X3 appears larger compared to the current-generation model, which is not unexpected considering the latest X1 now measures 4.5 meters (177 inches) in length. Although the current X3 remains the larger of the two crossovers, BMW is anticipated to restore the distinction between them.

Automotive spies were unable to catch a glimpse inside, but we can readily observe the side-by-side screens that are a part of the latest iDrive infotainment system. This translates to a streamlined dashboard with significantly fewer traditional controls, as the majority of functions are now accessed through the touchscreen.

It is intriguing to ponder what will power the M50i and whether the inline-six engine will continue in the new generation of the X3. When the "M50i" designation was replaced by "M60i" for the X5, X6, and X7, the larger luxury SUVs retained their V8 engines and gained a mild-hybrid system. If BMW follows a similar path for the smaller crossover, it suggests that the X3 M Performance variant may feature a 3.0-liter engine with a 48V setup. However, it is important to note that no official confirmation has been made at this time.

When it comes to names, there are rumors that the upcoming X3 will remove the "i" from the gasoline-fueled models, while retaining the "d" for the diesel variants. BMW plans to continue offering a plug-in hybrid version of this crossover, while the fully electric version will be based on the Neue Klasse and known as the iX3.

The X3 won't be the first new crossover to debut as BMW plans to unveil the second-generation X2 / iX2 later this year. The X3 is expected to follow in 2024, possibly in the first few months, according to a trusted BMW insider. The iX3, based on the Neue Klasse, is set to launch in 2025.
