New BMW X5 Protection VR6 debuts as armor-plated 530-hp SUV

The updated 2024 BMW X5 was unveiled earlier this year, and like its predecessor, it now has an armored version. Scheduled for its first public appearance in September at the 2023 Munich Motor Show, the BMW X5 Protection VR6 is ready to make its debut. We've got all the specifics about this fortified SUV.

One important feature of this specialized BMW is its exterior, which closely resembles the standard X5 models. Elements like the twin M bars on the front double kidney grille, high-gloss black M mirror caps, BMW Individual high-gloss Shadow Line roof rails, and the characteristic dual exhaust pipes of the M exhaust system contribute to its stealthy appearance, making it indistinguishable at first glance from other X5s.

Beneath its conventional exterior lies an intricately engineered protective shell. Molded high-strength steel plates are carefully designed to fit areas like the doors, side frame, roof, and bulkhead. Additional features include an armored divider in the trunk and an aluminum shield underneath the car to protect against shrapnel. If the fuel tank is compromised by bullets or shrapnel, a specialized casing is in place to seal any punctures and prevent leaks. The vehicle complies with VPAM ballistic standards, and extra options like underbody and roof armor can be added for increased safety.

In terms of performance, this vehicle is essentially a 2024 BMW X5 in M60i xDrive configuration. A 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 is paired with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, delivering 390 kW/530 hp and a peak torque of 750 Nm (553 lb-ft). Although the car's weight remains undisclosed, the additional armor does impact its speed. The acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) clocks in at 5.9 seconds, which is slower than the M60i's 4.2 seconds but consistent with the performance of previous armored versions. The maximum speed is 210 km/h (131 mph), and the braking and suspension systems are specially calibrated to manage the extra weight.

 

Inside, the X5 Protection VR6 offers a premium experience, featuring a 14.9-inch infotainment screen and a 12.3-inch driver display. Four-zone climate control and sport seats upholstered in Sensafin leather are standard. However, this model is designed to be a four-seater to prioritize "comfort and safety."

Unique add-ons for the Protection VR6 model include an exterior intercom system, optional LED flashers in the front grille, back flashers, roof-mounted horn and flasher systems, and a roof antenna equipped with an extra receiver for digital radio. Additionally, BMW provides a specialized driver training program focused on "tactical behavior."

The armored X5 is produced at a specific section of BMW's manufacturing facility in Spartanburg, North Carolina. While pricing details have yet to be disclosed, the first units are expected to roll out in February 2024.
