From its inception, Tesla has omitted a common safety feature often found in less expensive cars: blind-spot monitors. This has changed with the revamped Model 3.

Rather than installing these monitors in the side mirrors like most vehicles, Tesla placed them in the upper speaker grille on the driver's door in the 2024 Model 3. Despite its unconventional placement, the location is easily accessible for drivers.

Tesla may be debuting these specific blind-spot monitors for the first time, but the company has not ignored the issue of blind spots altogether. For years, Tesla's fleet has utilized side cameras to show the area next to the car when the turn signal is on, similar to some Hyundai and Kia models. Additionally, Tesla cars alert the driver with a warning sound if they try to change lanes while another vehicle is adjacent.

A variety of journalists and YouTubers have recently test-driven the updated Model 3. A video from a YouTuber named Automobile Propre offers a quick glimpse of the new blind-spot monitor in operation. At the 9:15 timestamp of the video, a small orange light illuminates in the speaker grille as a car passes by in the opposite lane.

The 2024 Tesla Model 3 has seen other updates to modernize its features. The interior now comes standard with an ambient lighting system, and ventilated seats have been added—key for those residing in warm climates. However, some changes have drawn criticism from Tesla fans, such as the removal of turn signal stalks and the gear selector stalk, requiring drivers to use the central touchscreen to choose Drive, Reverse, or Park.
