As the VW Golf and Skoda Octavia are set for a 2024 refresh, it's not surprising that Cupra is also testing an overhauled version of the Leon. Automotive photographers captured two test models in southern Europe, and though they may seem identical at first glance, subtle differences are present.

Some might question the need for the camouflage, given that Cupra unveiled the 2024 Leon unmasked in June 2022. Despite being a mid-cycle modification, this update is rather significant, especially in contrast to the minor changes expected for the Golf. The front end now features new headlights with a design inspired by the three-point theme found in the Tavascan electric crossover.

In addition to the new headlights, the Cupra is set to sport a completely reimagined front bumper. It will include a bolder lower air intake that follows a grid design. However, the radar sensor still protrudes noticeably instead of being seamlessly integrated elsewhere. While the Leon appears more assertive than its predecessor, some might favor the simpler design of the existing model. Although the recent spy photos focus on the hatchback, earlier images have showcased the more utilitarian wagon variant.

A recent article by Autocar floated the idea that the VW Group might discontinue the Seat Leon, offering the refreshed model exclusively as a Cupra. While the likelihood of this remains uncertain, Seat's future is also under review. When inquired about Seat's destiny, company chairman Thomas Schäfer remarked, "the future of Seat is Cupra." While the legacy brand will continue, its focus will shift, potentially transforming into a mobility brand specializing in e-scooters and similar products.

The revamped Seat/Cupra Leon is expected to make its debut in 2024 and should remain on the market for about 3-4 years. Given that VW has announced the next-generation Golf will be fully electric, it's logical to assume the upcoming Leon and Octavia will follow suit. Audi has already stated that its A3 successor will abandon internal combustion engines, indicating that VW Group's compact MQB platform vehicles are gearing up for a final iteration.
