Next year, Mercedes-Benz will unveil an updated G-Class SUV that will borrow aerodynamic enhancements from its upcoming electric counterpart, the EQG, to significantly improve fuel efficiency.

For those eyeing the all-electric version of the G-Class, increased efficiency will be a notable benefit, especially given that the vehicle's boxy design isn't exactly a poster child for aerodynamics. Although the electric version will retain its iconic appearance, it will integrate multiple aerodynamic adjustments to extend driving range. These aerodynamic innovations from the EQG will also be implemented in the G-Class update slated for 2024.

In a conversation with Autocar, Emmerich Schiller, the Managing Director of Mercedes-Benz G GmbH, confirmed that the G-Class will undergo "really dramatic improvement to the aerodynamics." According to Schiller, most people won't even notice these refinements, even if they're sitting right beside the vehicle. Nonetheless, these changes are expected to result in "a tremendous reduction in fuel consumption."

Schiller also noted that the design of the refreshed G-Class will remain largely consistent, regardless of whether it features a gasoline/diesel engine or an electric motor. The production-ready EQG is set to be unveiled in the first half of 2024, with updates to the internal combustion engine (ICE) variant expected around the same timeframe.

As for the powertrain options, the 2024 G-Class will discontinue the V8-powered G500 model, as the Final Edition that was revealed in late June in Europe signals the end for that specific variant. It remains uncertain whether the U.S.-spec G550 will follow suit by phasing out the V8 engine during the mid-cycle update for the W463 G-Class. If it does, the eight-cylinder engine is expected to remain in the lineup for the AMG G63 for the foreseeable future.
