A jury of German and international automotive journalists has selected the Volkswagen ID.7 as the German Car of the Year (GCOTY) 2024. The all-electric model beat off competition from vehicles in all classes.
The trophy was accepted by CEO Thomas Schäfer in the Volkswagen brand high-rise in Wolfsburg. Schäfer commented on the result: “We had barely presented our ID 7 before it was named German Car of the Year by a renowned expert jury – an incredible success! The win shows that we are on the right track: top quality, intuitive operation and efficiency that is fun. 100 percent Volkswagen.”
The winner was chosen from the five class winners: MG4 (Compact - up to 35,000 euros purchase price), Volkswagen ID 7 (Premium - up to 70,000 euros purchase price), Kia EV9 (Luxury - over 70,000 euros purchase price), Hyundai Ioniq 6 (New Energy - alternative drives) and Porsche 911 T (Performance). The jury selected the class winners from all major vehicles newly launched on the German market since 2022/23.
German Car of the Year 2024: Volkswagen ID.7
With the Volkswagen ID 7, an electric car has prevailed against conventionally powered models for the sixth time: the Jaguar I-Pace won the GCOTY 2019 election, the Porsche Taycan was chosen in 2020, the Honda e in 2021 and the Hyundai Ioniq 5 in 2022. In 2023, a Volkswagen took overall victory for the first time with the ID Buzz.
The GCOTY jury consists of 29 automotive journalists from German-speaking countries. Ten international guest jurors also voted. The award is supported by the consulting firm Aitastic and the companies Alcantara, Bridgestone, Gentex, KST Motorenprüfung and ZF Friedrichshafen.
