To celebrate the Golf R's 20th anniversary, Volkswagen released a costly 20 Years Edition of their all-wheel-drive hot hatch in 2022. It was available in Germany for $59,995. Recently, Volkswagen reintroduced a similar car earlier this year as the Golf R 333 with a substantial price increase, as the company put a €76,410 sticker on its most powerful Golf ever. Despite the exorbitant cost, all 333 units sold in merely eight minutes.
The R 333 was only sold in Germany, despite the 20 Years Edition being available in other countries. This Golf model was the most expensive in history and had a higher price tag than the technically superior Audi RS3, which featured a stronger inline-five engine. The ultimate hot hatch from Wolfsburg cost about the same as a Porsche 718 Cayman S. Customers received an invitation to the Autostadt in Wolfsburg to collect their prized possessions, making the purchase all the more worthwhile.
Volkswagen Golf R 333 Limited Edition
The Autostadt served as a temporary home for more than 20 identically equipped Golf R 333s painted in Lime Yellow Metallic. These cars all feature 19-inch Estoril Black wheels, an Akrapovič quad exhaust and a DSG gearbox. Under the hood, the turbocharged 2.0-liter gasoline engine has been tuned to make 333 hp and 420 Nm. That's enough four-cylinder punch for a 0 to 100 km/h time of 4.6 seconds and a top speed of 270 km/h after loosening the electronic limiter.
The Autostadt is a building adjacent to the Volkswagen plant in Wolfsburg that serves as a visitor attraction in the same vein as the better-known BMW Welt. VW, in cooperation with the Autostadt, will organize the GTI meeting from July 26 to 28 next year as a successor to the defunct Wörthersee GTI, which had been held since 1982. The event's relocation was forced by the local community of Maria Wörth, which decided that the meeting was not in line with its environmental policy.
