These vehicles are part of the Vatican City State's strategy to reduce its carbon footprint, with the goal of achieving a climate-neutral fleet by 2030. Imelda Labbé, a board member at Volkswagen Passenger Cars responsible for Sales, Marketing, and After-Sales, along with Dr. Christian Dahlheim, Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen Financial Services AG, personally delivered the first two electric vehicles to the Vatican, specifically two ID.3 Pro Performance models.
The Vatican City State is committed to adopting innovative and sustainable solutions to lessen the environmental impact of human activities and protect the planet. Mobility is central to the "Ecological Conversion 2030" program, which aims to lower the CO2 emissions of the state's vehicle fleet. This involves a gradual replacement of existing vehicles with electric ones, with the ultimate goal of achieving a completely carbon-neutral fleet by 2030.
Volkswagen has been selected as the partner for this initiative, and starting from early 2024, it will provide the Vatican State with a fleet of electric vehicles. As the project progresses, additional zero-emission vehicles from other Volkswagen Group brands will be introduced until the entire fleet is fully electric by 2030.
Imelda Labbé expressed her enthusiasm for this endeavor, stating, "The electrification of fleets is becoming increasingly important across the globe. The fact that Vatican employees will now also be among our ID. drivers in the future is a great target and honor for our brand and underscores the attractiveness of our all-electric ID. models."
Dr. Christian Dahlheim also emphasized their support for the Vatican in this significant project, highlighting Volkswagen's competitiveness in offering sustainable mobility solutions.
