Baojun, a joint venture between China's SAIC and Wuling, and America's General Motors are introducing a larger version of their tiny, rugged SUV, the Yep.

The Yep Plus now sports five doors, offering added practicality to this charming urban crossover. In 2023, Baojun managed to sell only 14,683 units of the Yep, despite its starting price of 83,800 yuan (approximately US$11,800). The company had higher hopes for sales.

Despite being designed for crowded city streets, the Yep Plus retains its boxy, off-road-ready appearance, with a two-tone paint job reminiscent of the Ford Bronco Sport.

While the standard Yep boasts a 28.1 kWh battery pack, providing a range of 303 km per charge and 67 hp with two doors, the battery details of the Yep Plus remain undisclosed. However, the four-door SUV is expected to offer an impressive 401 km range per charge.

To enhance its performance, Baojun has upgraded the motor to deliver 101 hp, enabling a top speed of 150 km/h. This boost in power and practicality is likely to attract more buyers.

The interior details are yet to be unveiled, but the Yep comes with a standard 10.25-inch touchscreen and an instrument screen of the same size, making it a surprisingly tech-forward vehicle in its price range. Regrettably, the Yep Plus seems to have omitted the trunk-mounted screen found in the standard Yep, which allows drivers to communicate with vehicles behind them. However, it may be available as an optional feature.

The Yep Plus is set to hit the Chinese market in the first quarter of 2024. Pricing information is yet to be revealed, but Chinese media estimates it to be around 150,000 yuan (approximately US$21,100).
