China's Chery plans to bring its new electric Omoda 5 EV to the German market in the first half of 2024. This 4.4 metre long crossover has two versions with different batteries and supports fast charging.

The Omoda 5 EV was first unveiled at the Shanghai Motor Show in 2023, after which it also visited the Geneva Motor Show in Qatar. It is a front-wheel drive vehicle with a 150 kW (204 hp) engine and 340 Nm of torque. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h takes 7.8 seconds.

Two versions of the CATL battery pack are promised for the Omoda 5 EV, according to details. The most affordable version of the electric car, priced from 37,000 euros, will receive a 41 kWh battery, which provides a range of 300 kilometres. The second version will get a 62 kWh battery and a 450 kilometre range. Chery claimed to be able to charge up to 80 per cent in 35 minutes.

Buyers in Germany are promised a choice of seven body colours and three interior colour options. Inside there are two connected monitors (in front of the driver and in the centre) with a total diagonal of 24.6 inches.

The car will get 17 assistance systems including adaptive cruise control (ACC), lane departure warning, reverse hazard warning, collision avoidance system and door open warning.

Market launch in Germany is scheduled for the first half of 2024. No further details have yet been provided.

The Omoda 5 EV will compete, among others, with the Hyundai Kona Electric of roughly the same size, which is available from 42,000 euros for a version with 115 kW of power and a range of 377 kilometres. Other competitors also include the new Renault Scenic Electric, which is available with 125 kW of power and a range of 430 kilometres, priced from 41,400 euros. The VW ID.4 Pure is currently cheaper: from 32,600 euros (125 kW and a driving range of 364 kilometres).
