BMW has developed the manual Z4 M40i. Confirming previous reports, the modular six-speed manual has been customized specifically for this engine, including adjustments to the gear set and shafts. Additionally, there are revisions to the shift lever, its guide, and their connection to the transmission. BMW's objective is to provide drivers with a precise mechanical connection to the drivetrain.
Opting for the six-speed manual brings some exciting performance enhancements to the Z4. The package includes unique auxiliary springs at the front and rear, along with a reinforced anti-roll bar clamp at the front. Software updates to the variable-ratio steering system, traction control, M Sport differential, and rear suspension dampers contribute to sharpening the roadster's performance compared to the automatic version. The wheel sizes are 19x9 inches up front and 20x10 inches at the rear, a significant improvement over the automatic's 18x9-inch front and 18x10-inch rear wheel configuration.

The turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine retains its power output at 250 kW/340 hp and 500 Nm (369 lb-ft). With the six-speed manual, the Z4 M40i can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds, slightly slower than the 4.5 seconds achieved by the eight-speed automatic.

To distinguish the manual Z4, there are some aesthetic changes. The roadster comes standard with BMW's Shadowline trim, adding black accents to the side mirror caps, badges, and rear fender flaps. The brake calipers are in red, and there are two model-exclusive colors: San Remo Green metallic and BMW Individual Frozen Deep Green metallic.
Inside, there are five options for Vernasca leather upholstery. An interior featuring Cognac brown hides, black piping, and high-gloss trim is exclusive to the manual-equipped Z4.
Production of the manual-equipped Z4 is set to commence in March, with deliveries starting in late spring or early summer. It's not yet clear whether the manual M40i will have limited production numbers or if this gearbox will be available in other versions of the Z4.
