A German-Czech consortium wants to develop a motorcycle powered by a hydrogen fuel cell as part of the Hydrocycle project.
According to a statement from the Fraunhofer IWU in Chemnitz, which is involved in the project, the hydrogen bike should serve as "inspiration for the mobility of the future". It could be of interest to urban delivery services and parcel services.
The Saxony-based company WätaS Wärmetauscher Sachsen GmbH will develop a new generation of fuel cell stacks as the basis for the drive train, while Fraunhofer IWU will support the development of new production technologies and the improvement of stack functionalities with the "reference factory.H2". The Fraunhofer Institute in Chemnitz is also responsible for system dimensioning and packaging, as well as ensuring a smooth interface between vehicle and fuel cell system development.
The advantage over battery-electric motorcycles lies in the longer range and shorter refuelling times, according to the initiators. The project is funded by the EU and the state of Saxony.
