Saarbahn GmbH, a well-known transport company, has chosen Wrightbus as its supplier for hydrogen buses. This decision follows a Europe-wide tender.
The production of these buses will take place at the Wrightbus headquarters in Ballymena. The first batch of these environmentally friendly buses, consisting of 5 vehicles, is expected before the end of this year.
"With Wrightbus, we have found a partner to bring zero-emission buses to the streets of Saarbrücken and the neighbouring region as quickly as possible. We take our environmental responsibility very seriously and this is the first step towards ensuring that the first part of our fleet will consist of zero-emission buses in the next few years, as required by the EU's Clean Vehicle Directive," explains project manager Torsten Burgardt from Saarbahn.
The tendering process for the H2 refuelling station has also been successfully completed in the meantime. The refuelling station is to be built at the Saarbahn bus depot in Malstatter Straße in Saarbrücken at the same time as the buses are delivered. Saarbahn is investing around 5 million euros in the construction of the refuelling infrastructure. This project is also being subsidised by the BMDV.
Jean-Marc Gales, Chief Executive of Wrightbus, explains: "This is an important deal for Wrightbus, Saarbahn and the people of Saarland. We are delighted to be providing even more zero-emission buses in support of clear net zero targets. Saarbahn is the largest transport company in Saarland, so the addition of hydrogen buses to the fleet will have a significant positive impact on the region's environment."
Together with Saarbahn Netz GmbH, Saarbahn GmbH employs around 580 people and transports around 43.7 million passengers by road and rail every year.
Wrightbus has been one of the drivers of innovation in the transport industry since 1946. The company is known for setting new standards of excellence and offers a wide range of zero-emission buses in Europe and the UK. Among other things, Wrightbus developed the world's first hydrogen double-decker bus and the world's most efficient electric double-decker.
