Rivian surprised everyone at the launch of the new Rivian R2 SUV with the announcement of an even smaller and cheaper R3 crossover.

Rivian did not disclose figures, but said the R3 crossover will be even smaller than the 185.6-inch (4,715 mm) R2. Rivian CEO R. J. Scaringe also revealed at the unveiling that the R3's wheelbase is five inches (127 mm) shorter. Doing some simple calculations yields 110.6 inches (2,809 mm).

The Rivian R3 will be built on the same platform as the R2. Both electric models will be available in single-engine, twin-engine and tri-engine versions. The single-engine version will be rear-wheel drive, while the others will be all-wheel drive.

Judging by the photos with people in the frame, the Rivian R3 looks more like an elevated hatchback than an SUV. However, it will have an uncharacteristically hatchback-like raised boot door glass. By the way, the extra boot will be at the front and two gloveboxes are expected in the cabin.

In addition to the regular R3, there will be a sporty version called the R3X. It is a kind of small rally car with a three-motor transmission, large wheels and slightly increased ground clearance.

The company has not yet revealed how much the Rivian R3 will cost, noting only that it will be cheaper than the R2 with its starting price in the US of $45,000. Deliveries of the R2 will start in the first half of 2026, hence the R3 will have to wait a little longer.
