Tesla announced it has built its 6 millionth car, a Tesla Model Y. The company shared this milestone through its X channel.

This milestone comes after Tesla manufactured its five millionth electric car on September 17, 2023. Accomplishing the production of the latest million in just 6.5 months, Tesla projects hitting 7 million units by the end of 2024. By the close of 2023, cumulative deliveries surpassed 5.45 million units. Notably, the combined deliveries of Model 3 and Model Y exceeded 5 million units.

Aside from these models, Tesla also produces other vehicles including Model S, Model X, and Cybertruck. However, Tesla faces stiff competition from BYD, which recently celebrated its seven millionth plug-in car. BYD's sales include about 3.5 million all-electric cars and an equal number of plug-in hybrids.

In the last quarter of 2023, BYD edged out Tesla in all-electric car sales by a narrow margin but forecasts suggest that Tesla might regain its leading position in Q1 2024.
