The Chinese car manufacturer Chery is set to establish its first production facility in Europe by taking over the former Nissan plant in Barcelona, Spain.

Chery is close to finalizing an agreement to build cars in Spain, according to a Reuters report. The transition reflects Chery's expansion into European markets, having begun selling vehicles in Spain since the beginning of the year. These vehicles include models with combustion engines, hybrid drives, and purely electric drives.

A Spanish delegation recently held talks with Chery in China this week. The outcome of these discussions was described as promising. This significant step will mark Chery's increased presence in Europe and its commitment to producing cars locally.

Nissan ceased production at the Barcelona plant at the end of 2021. The last vehicle produced there was the e-NV200 electric van. Nissan started its operations at this location in 1983 with the production of the Nissan Patrol. The facility includes parts such as the main plant in Zona Franca, a press shop in Montcada i Reixac, and frame and suspension construction in Sant Andreu de la Barca.

While Chery moves forward with its plans, it's worth noting that Great Wall Motors, another Chinese car manufacturer, had expressed interest in acquiring the Nissan plant but negotiations failed.
