The new X3, set to hit markets later this year, showcases evolutionary changes with camouflaged prototypes. These images hint at both plug-in hybrid and M Performance variants sporting a new quad exhaust system—a feature typically reserved for full-fledged M models. There's a buzz around a possible name change for the high-performance variant from 'M40i' to 'M50'.
In terms of design and mechanics, the upcoming X3 is known internally as 'G45'. It sports a sleeker body with a lower drag coefficient of 0.27 and offers increased rigidity. Enhancements include a wider track and an adaptive chassis option with electronically controlled shock absorbers for better handling.

Inside, BMW opts for minimalism with fewer buttons and more functions integrated into a large touchscreen. The new model is also expected to grow slightly in size compared to its predecessor to differentiate it further from the newer X1 model.
Looking ahead, BMW has plans for an electric version of the X3. Named iX3, it will sit on the Neue Klasse platform aimed specifically at electric vehicles and is expected next year. It promises more space owing to its EV-specific architecture and features such as an extended head-up display.
The next X3 with gasoline, diesel, and plug-in hybrid power is coming in a few weeks and will be going on sale before the end of the year.
