Shortly thereafter, the Malaysian Road Transport Department issued a recall for approximately 600 units of the vehicle model, concerned about potential similar failures.
This specific failure was traced back to faulty welding linked to uncalibrated equipment used after a tip replacement. The problem originated from a worn-out tip in an automated welding machine which was not recalibrated post-replacement. This manufacturing defect impacted vehicles produced between August 14 and August 17, 2023.
The manufacturer, Chery, quickly announced this defect stemming from their supplier's oversight and informed local owners about the situation. To facilitate owner verifications for potentially affected vehicles, Chery provided resources on their Product Update page where vehicle identification numbers (VIN) could be checked against recall notices.
As of now, it remains uncertain whether Chery Omoda 5 models sold outside Malaysia might also be affected or require recalls. However, the company has been prompt in addressing the issue within Malaysia.
