According to the entertainment news outlet Puck, this massive budget places the film just outside the top ten most expensive films ever made. This project features Brad Pitt in the role of a retired F1 driver who comes back to mentor an upcoming talent. Due to its high-production values, including employing a modified F2 racer for authenticity, costs have surged significantly.
Other than Pitt, the cast also includes Damson Idris, Kerry Condon, Tobias Menzies, Lewis Hamilton, Javier Bardem, and Sarah Niles.
Pitt is an A-list celebrity, but his best box office performance was in 2013 with World War Z, which made $540.4 million. That’s a lot of money, but in Hollywood, a movie typically needs to make twice its budget to be considered a success. The F1 movie will have to make over $600 million to be considered a success.
The film has one advantage: it’s being distributed by Apple TV+, which has its own success measures. In addition to box office returns, Pitt’s F1 movie will also be measured on its ability to win over streaming clients, which could help cover some of the film’s costs.
