On May 16, a severe fire destroyed a BYD showroom in Qingkou, Fujian Province, China. The incident left the building and seven vehicles completely destroyed. Fortunately, no casualties were reported. This marks the tenth such event at a BYD showroom since 2021.

The fire broke out at around 12:32 a.m. and was extinguished by 7 responding fire trucks by 1:18 a.m. The estimated damage is valued at around 5 million yuan (approximately US$692,600). Firefighters managed to prevent further devastation despite the massive flames that enveloped the property.

BYD confirmed that preliminary investigations suggest the fire might have originated from an office or roof area on the second floor due to potential issues like a short circuit or aging wiring. The company also stated that there were no abnormalities found in the batteries of any vehicles involved, ruling them out as causes.

The company emphasized its commitment to working with authorities to thoroughly investigate this issue and avoid future incidents.

History reveals this isn't an isolated incident for BYD showrooms; with nine other fires recorded across various locations in China since October 2021. Incidents ranged from Hainan Province to metropolitan areas like Chengdu and Shenyang.

This series of incidents poses serious questions about safety standards and preventive measures within electric vehicle showrooms and associated infrastructure, potentially impacting consumer confidence in electric vehicle technology amid escalating market penetration by companies such as BYD.
