Tesla launched construction on its new Megafactory in Shanghai, China, on May 23, 2024. The facility marks Tesla's first dedicated energy storage production site outside of the United States.

Tesla Shanghai Megafactory will produce Megapack batteries with a capacity to annually output approximately 40 GWh, enough to support around 50,000 local homes for a year.

Tesla senior vice president Tom Zhu noted that the Shanghai Megafactory will play a critical role in the company’s global battery storage strategy. And considering that the Megapack is designed for grid use, the upcoming facility is poised to play a notable role in the world’s transition to sustainable energy. The Shanghai Megafactory also stands as the newest high-profile investment from the electric vehicle maker in the ten years since the company entered the Chinese market.

Positioned adjacent to Giga Shanghai, the facility spans roughly 200,000 square meters (49.4 acres) and aligns with enhancing Tesla's production capabilities significantly. The Shanghai Megafactory is set to start producing batteries by the first quarter of 2025.

Tesla’s flagship product at this facility will be the large-scale battery storage unit known as Megapack. Designed primarily for grid use, each pack boasts a storage capacity exceeding 3 MWh and can power 3,600 homes for an hour. Its fully scalable design offers an efficient alternative to conventional peaker power plants.

Despite initial timelines projecting construction starting in Q3 of 2023 and production in Q2 of 2024, revisions were made due to procedural delays. Following the permit grant from Shanghai authorities on May 16, 2024, Tesla proceeded with construction plans by end-May of the same year.
