The specific problem originates from the vehicle's high-voltage battery safety plug. According to the NHTSA report, this component might overheat and melt. This could potentially lead to a loss of driving power or even start a fire. The cause of the defect is suspected to be a deviation in manufacturing standards by the supplier for this safety plug's terminal.
In response to this hazardous issue, Kia has initiated a free replacement service for the affected battery plugs. The company will replace the faulty component with an updated unit designed to prevent overheating. Owners of these potentially affected vehicles will be notified by mail with instructions on how to proceed.
Both Kia and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) have advised owners to stop charging these vehicles indoors until repairs are made.
