The problem was identified as the seat belt warning system failing to meet minimum legal standards for notifying drivers. Specifically, it does not provide a visual warning for at least a minute or an audible warning for at least four seconds as required.
To address this issue, Tesla plans to deploy an over-the-air software update that will adjust the logic used in the system. The new programming will rely on the status of the driver's seat belt buckle and ignition instead of the driver's seat occupancy switch.
Vehicles affected by the recall include:
- 2012-2024 Model S vehicles
- 2015-2024 Model X vehicles
- 2017-2023 Model 3 vehicles
- 2020-2023 Model Y vehicles
Fortunately, there have been no reported accidents or injuries related to this issue so far according to NHTSA data.
Affected customers will receive notification letters by July 27, 2024. They are advised that immediate action is not necessary until they receive instructions directly from Tesla regarding the software update.
