Scania is set to introduce a new gas-powered version of its Touring coach, featuring a 13-litre engine capable of using either liquefied or compressed natural gas. This model aims to deliver performance comparable to diesel engines but with lower operational costs and noise levels.

The new Scania Touring bus offers over 1000 km range per standard tank fill. The new variant comes with a 13-litre gas engine that provides 410 hp (302 kW) and 2000 Nm. Carl-Johan Lööf, Scania's Head of Product Management for People Transport Solutions, emphasized the efficiency and sustainability of the product. He stated, "This product gives you power, torque and range equivalent to that of a diesel powered bus or coach, while actually reducing noise levels and offering lower operating costs."

Jonas Strömberg, the Sustainable Transport Business Manager at Scania, pointed out the broader implications for heavy-duty transport sector decarbonization through biogas utilization. "Biogas can play a key role in decarbonizing heavy duty transport... The infrastructure for fuel production and tank stations continues to expand," he explained.

Scania's commitment to alternative fuel options extends beyond the new Touring model. The company's portfolio includes other models structured around low-carbon powertrain technologies like the Scania Beulas DD LBG/LNG and Scania Irizar i6S Efficient LBG/LNG introduced at Busworld last year.

Biogas is a fossil-free and renewable fuel that offers CO2 emission reductions of up to 90 percent compared to diesel from a well-to-wheel perspective, and it also provides other benefits for sustainable development. Through local fuel production, cities and municipalities can create local jobs and solve local waste problems, while also increasing energy security and bringing carbon and nutrients back to the soil.

Biogas has long been used in compressed form to power city- and suburban buses. In the past few years, technology developments have enabled the gas to be cooled down and transformed to energy-dense liquid – LBG/LNG – turning it into a more viable solution for heavy commercial vehicles operating long-distance routes.
