Hyundai has filed a patent earlier this month with the United States Patent and Trademark Office and the German Patent and Trademark Office to develop a more affordable Formula 1-inspired steering wheel. This invention might lead to mass production of advanced steering wheels for mainstream models, making high-end technology accessible at a lower cost.

The patented technology concentrates on integrating shift lights into the steering wheel while reducing manufacturing costs. Hyundai aims to employ simpler, cheaper construction methods including modular wiring and LED display insets that can be embedded into the rim of the wheel.

Such steering wheels aren't used in everyday vehicles. You don't need to see shift lights when you're driving an affordable or luxury car. Hyundai has several performance models, with the Ioniq 5 N and Elantra N being two of our favorites. Hyundai N has already shown N Performance parts for the Ioniq 5 N. Other models will get their own parts soon. The wheel will probably be added soon.

Patent filings don't guarantee that the technology will be used in future vehicles. They're often used to protect intellectual property.
