In Portugal, a large logistics company Klog has started using the first of several Scania battery electric trucks to transport IKEA goods.

New Scania electric trucks deployed in Portugal will transport products from the IKEA Industry factory in Pasos de Ferreira to Porto harbour and IKEA stores.

According to Scania, similar transitions to electric vehicles for transporting IKEA products are also taking place in southern France and Poland.

“To be able to make a real shift towards transport decarbonisation, we need to collaborate across the value chain,” says Dariusz Mroczek, Category Area Transport Manager, IKEA Supply Chain Operations. “Today’s announcement is a great example of how we reduce carbon emissions and find scalable solutions together.”

The necessary charging infrastructure is being set up at the harbour site as well as at the IKEA Industry factory. To optimise operations, IKEA Industry has implemented a Pick-and-Drop solution, whereby a vehicle trailer is left in storage and replaced by another loaded one. This measure maximises vehicle uptime and avoids running empty trucks.
