The European Union and the UK are pushing carmakers to switch to electric vehicles while tightening emissions standards. This puts some carmakers in a difficult position, which in turn leads to radical actions.
Suzuki, for example, plans to stop selling the Swace, Swift Sport, Ignis and Jimny models in the UK by 2025. And maybe even earlier - it will all depend on how quickly dealers sell off their stock of cars.
When the sale of the 'old' models is over, Suzuki will still have a range of hybrid versions of the Swift, Vitara, S-Cross and Across PHEV. In addition, the first Suzuki electric car will appear next year. And closer to 2030, additional electric vehicles will follow.
Suzuki’s Dale Wyatt said, ‘‘The departure of these models will make room for EV[s] and enable us to compete during a period where our sales ratio of hybrid versus EV products will drive our business. We’re exiting the ICE era with a focus on SUV’s and new Swift, then starting in the second half of 2025, we’ll begin a period of EV growth.”
Suzuki eVX Concept
As for the aforementioned electric vehicle, Suzuki announced it last year with the eVX concept. This crossover "aims to carry forward the brand’s 4×4 legacy into the new electric era to deliver a true Suzuki SUV driving experience." More importantly, the concept had a 60 kWh battery pack that allowed it to travel 342 miles (550 kilometres) on India's MIDC cycle.
