Porsche's production manager, Albrecht Reimold, revealed to Automobilwoche that the Boxster and Cayman will cease production by mid-next year. Porsche is moving forward with an all-electric replacement, which Reimold has driven and described as a "real fun car." Although specific details were not provided, spy shots suggest the convertible version will debut first.
The previous-generation Macan with a gas engine is also on its way out. Despite the launch of its all-new electric successor, the older Macan remains available outside the EU. Reimold stated that by mid-2026, Porsche will be "fully committed" to the electric version, with limited parts availability hastening the end of the ICE model.
Stricter European regulations further seal the fate of the gasoline Macan. Reimold explained that investing in a 10-year-old car wouldn't be financially viable, despite its popularity: "Volume alone is not a benchmark for us as a luxury manufacturer."
The impact on sales from discontinuing these models could be significant. In 2023, the 718 lineup saw a 13 percent increase in sales to 20,518 units, while the Macan maintained steady demand with 87,355 units sold. The Macan was nearly Porsche's top seller, just behind the Cayenne by fewer than 200 units.
It remains uncertain how enthusiasts will react to a Boxster/Cayman without a gasoline engine behind the seats. A spike in sales of the outgoing 718 is possible while the gas engines are still available. Nonetheless, with these models already gone from Europe, matching the sales performance of 2023 seems unlikely.
