After 30 years leading Audi's small executive gas car lineup, the A4 is being discontinued. The A5, previously known for stylish coupes, will now serve as Audi's gas sedan for middle managers. This change aligns with Audi's strategy of making even-numbered models electric and odd-numbered models gasoline-powered.

The new A5 features a fresh design, updated tech, and a range of internal combustion engines (ICE). The base model has a 2.0 TFSI engine with 150 PS, and an optional version produces 204 PS. This engine includes a turbocharger with variable turbine geometry (VTG) for efficient fuel use under partial load. The 150-PS variant is front-wheel drive, while the 204-PS variant offers both front-wheel drive and quattro ultra.

The 2.0 TDI engine, from the EA288 evo generation, features TwinDosing for emissions control and two balance shafts for smooth operation. It generates 204 PS and 400 Nm of torque and is available with a dual-clutch gearbox and front-wheel drive or quattro ultra. This engine includes a 48-volt mild hybrid system to reduce CO2 emissions and improve comfort with a smooth engine start.

The S5 variant boasts a turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 engine with 367 hp, using a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and quattro all-wheel drive with torque vectoring. Audi has refined the suspension and steering, and adaptive dampers are available for customizable ride quality.

In the US, the A5 and S5 will be offered as sedans. Internationally, there will be an Avant wagon version, but no coupe or convertible. Both models use Audi’s new Premium Platform Combustion architecture, supporting front- or all-wheel drive and gas or hybrid powertrains.

The A5 has grown in size but retains a sleek profile. The exterior features a wide grille, large vents, and real tailpipes. LED daytime running lights and second-generation OLEDs for the rear are standard, with customizable lighting effects available in Europe.

Inside, the A5 emphasizes human-centric design, a Digital Stage with two MMI infotainment displays, material-driven comfort, and visual clarity. The longer wheelbase provides more interior space, and US models include a panoramic sunroof.

The Digital Stage infotainment setup includes a slim OLED MMI display, an 11.9-inch virtual cockpit screen, a 14.5-inch MMI touch display, and an optional 10.9-inch passenger display. A configurable head-up display allows control of vehicle and infotainment functions.

Additional features include an optional passenger screen for navigation or streaming, a Bang and Olufsen sound system with headrest speakers, and dual-zone audio for separate driver and passenger experiences.

The Audi A5 and Audi S5 will be launched in Germany and numerous other European countries in November. The Audi A5 family will be available to order in Germany from July 2024 at an entry price starting at EUR 45,200 and will include navigation, an electrically powered rear hatch, and a telephone tray with inductive charging as standard.
