This measure, set to be implemented by the end of the year, will affect 400 government-owned 100-kilowatt ultra-fast chargers. The initiative aims to reduce congestion and free up charging stations more quickly for other users, especially since the charging speed decreases significantly for the last 20% of the battery to protect its durability and safety.
Seoul's policy follows a similar approach recently adopted by VW subsidiary Electrify America, which began a pilot program at ten US locations in July, limiting EV charging to 85% SoC.
This development coincides with Seoul City signing a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with LG Electronics to install over 50 public fast-chargers in the city by 2026. LG will also provide slow chargers, although the exact number has not been specified.
